How much should a small business website cost in 2026?

The honest answer is “it depends” — but that’s a cop-out without context. Here’s what actually drives the price, and how to tell what you’re really paying for.

Why there’s no single price

A website can cost almost nothing or tens of thousands of dollars, and both can be the “right” price — for different businesses. The number depends on what the site has to do: a one-page brochure and a booking platform that takes payments are not the same project.

The real ranges

Broadly, there are three tiers:

  • DIY builders (Wix, Squarespace, etc.): low monthly cost, your time instead of money. Great for getting something up; limited when you need it to perform.
  • Freelancers: a wide range depending on experience. You get a real person, but availability and long-term support vary.
  • Studios / agencies: higher upfront, because the work includes strategy, custom design and build, SEO foundations, and ongoing care.

We won’t quote you a flat number here, because anyone who gives you a price before understanding your business is guessing.

What actually drives the cost

Five things move the price more than anything else: how many pages and how much custom design, whether you need e-commerce or bookings, whether content and photography are handled for you, how much SEO and integration work is involved, and whether someone maintains it afterward.

What you’re really paying for

The cheapest site is rarely the least expensive. A site that loads slowly, can’t be found in search, or breaks when you need it costs you customers every day. What you’re actually buying is results: a site that gets found, earns trust, and turns visitors into business.

A better question than “how much?”

Ask “what will this site need to do to pay for itself?” Then build to that. If you want a straight answer for your situation, that’s exactly the conversation we like to have.
